Level curves of a function can be compared to contour lines on a (contour) map or isobars on a weather map; see the following examples.
The contour lines connect all the points with the same height. Isobars connect all the points with the same pressure. Similarly, level curves connect all the points with the same function value. See also Example 1, Example 2 en Example 3.
